End-of-term assessments

English:

Next week we will be completing some reading comprehension assessments in class.  These can not be revised for, but rely on the children reading regularly and completing their homework and classwork to the best of their ability.  The children do not need to worry excessively about them, as their main purpose is to establish what they need to be taught next in class and to see if their understanding of what they are reading is at an age-appropriate level.

The following week (beginning 2nd Dec) will include a spelling test, and a grammar/ punctuation assessment and a writing assessment.

For the spellings children should remind themselves all of the patterns taught so far, plus the common exception words taught.

For the grammar/ punctuation paper and writing assessment, children could remind themselves of the following:
  • Word types
  • Prefixes and suffixes
  • Informal and formal language
  • Use of punctuation e.g.    :   ;   (  )   ,     -   "  "   '
  • Modal verbs
  • Main and subordinate clauses
  • Conjunctions
  • Adverbial phrases
Maths:

The maths paper that the children will be sitting during the week of 2nd December is an evaluation of the work we have covered so far this term.

For revision purposes, children need to look over all the work done so far.  If they have any areas where they feel they need more help, they must come and speak to their teacher or ask for help at home.

It would be helpful for them to concentrate in particular on the following areas:

  • 4 main operations - addition, subtraction, division, multiplication - both mental and written methods and including decimals.
  • Order of operations - use of brackets, BODMAS.
  • Calculating percentages of amounts.
  • Multiples, factors, prime numbers, square numbers.
  • Rounding numbers and rounding remainders of divisions.
  • Statistics - pie charts (to cover next week) and calculating mean average.
